A Grand Place to Gather in the Heart of Los Angeles
LA Grand Park
Just across from the magnificent Disney Concert Hall and the elegant Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was something neither magnificent nor elegant: a neglected 35-acre patch of park and parking in the heart of a great city. That was then, this is new.
Today you’ll find a refreshed, reclaimed and rebuilt 35-acre, four square-block wonderland that includes a majestic fountain, water splash area, amphitheater, 20 acres of lawn and planting gardens (featuring plantings from around the world). You’ll also find bold new totem signage in 27 languages, reflecting L.A.’s multi-culturalism and global reach.
The team included Rios Clemente Hale Architects, Sussman/Prejza & Co., Charles Pankow Builders, and Weidner Architectural Signage. The Client was the national real estate development powerhouse, Related Companies.
But this project was no “walk in the park.” The team navigated a path riddled with environmental hurdles—including UV rays, human interaction (graffiti) and ongoing maintenance issues. In addition, wrapping the various languages and graphics around corners posed a unique signage challenge since the designer did not want the support structures to be visible. Finally, the internal illumination — a separate lexan structure — had to carry a consistent light without dark spots.
But, hey, it worked! The photos and smiles seen on site tell the story best.
As for the word on the street:
The working process and the end result that Rick Weidner delivered was first class. Rick is a person who cares, and performs as a collaborating member of the total design team.
Deborah Sussman, President of Sussman/Prejza & Co.
Rick and the Weidner team provided us with creative solutions, excellent craft and a seamless installation throughout one of the more complicated projects that we have recently completed. The Grand Park program featured translations in 26 languages, site-specific illustrations and generally a very detail-oriented program. Rick helped us navigate and work our way through a complex and pressurized process. What more can you ask of a collaborator?
